How to Garden with Kids: Regrow Groceries with Scrappy Science Fun

Ever chopped the end off a romaine lettuce and tossed it in the trash? Turns out, you might’ve been throwing away a science experiment! According to the Farmers' Almanac, plenty of common kitchen scraps—think scallions, cilantro, celery, carrots, and even potatoes—can be regrown right on your windowsill.

This fun, low-mess activity isn’t just a great way to reduce food waste; it’s also an awesome opportunity to teach kids about sustainability, biology, and the magic of nature’s cycles. Want start a garden with your kids? All you need is a jar of water, a little patience, and a sunny spot. Before you know it, you and your little ones will be sprouting roots and protecting the planet—one celery stalk at a time.

At Camp ECEC: Planet Protectors, we’re taking this kind of “scrappy” science to the next level. Our campers will get their hands dirty (in the best way), learning how to reuse, regrow, and rethink their relationship with the earth. Through gardening, recycling games, nature crafts, and more, we’re growing eco-heroes from the ground up.

Whether you try this activity at home or sign your child up to join our green team this summer, you’ll be giving them the tools to care for the planet—and maybe even grow dinner while they’re at it.

The summer camp program at ECEC is the perfect place for curious, creative, and eco-minded kids to spend their summer! With hands-on activities, outdoor adventures, and a focus on caring for the Earth, our Planet Protectors theme empowers children to explore nature, science, and sustainability in fun and meaningful ways.
